What to Expect from Your Comprehensive ENT Exam

When it comes to seeing a medical professional, we all want to know about the experience that awaits. Not only can it relieve anxiety before the appointment, but it can help us prepare for the best possible visit. If you have questions about what to expect from your comprehensive ENT exam, let us answer them.

Finding out the Meaning of “ENT”

Before we go into the specifics of your experience, let’s define our line of business! We’re ENT doctors, also known as Ear, Nose, and Throat doctors. Because those areas interrelate, they fall into a combined discipline. Whether you have sinus troubles, allergies, hearing difficulties, and more, we can help you.

Scheduling an Appointment

You may have already made an appointment. If not, request a referral from your insurance company or general practitioner. Have that with you, along with your health insurance, when you schedule your appointment. To contact us, see our info here! You may even be able to book an appointment without a referral.

Items to Bring

Next up! Before you visit us, gather these things:

  • The medicines you take in their prescription bottles, or a full list with names and dosages;
  • A list or records of your medical history, including the condition(s) you live with, so you have all the information handy;
  • A list of your symptoms;
  • Your insurance card; and
  • Your referral, if necessary.

Allocating Extra Time

We’ve all shown up to the doctor’s office late once or twice. It happens! Still, remind yourself to allocate extra time to your visit for paperwork. You should aim to show up 10 to 15 minutes prior to your appointment.

Preparing to Discuss Your Medical History

When it comes to what to expect from your comprehensive ENT exam, this part is of the utmost importance. After all, your medical history may offer the key to your difficulties. So, your ENT will discuss it with you. If you think you will have trouble remembering, you can write it down or print it out beforehand. Or, if you’re taking a loved one to an appointment, you may need to help with this portion of the exam.

Sitting through a Physical Exam

Your doctor will conduct a physical exam, which will vary depending on any symptoms you may be experiencing. Primarily this exam focuses on your sinuses. ENT specialists aim for this part to be pain-free, so just let your doctor know if you feel nervous or uncomfortable. Usually, it only takes several—very quick—minutes!

Knowing that Questions Are Always Welcome

Curiosity is always welcome! If you have questions, please ask away. After all, our goal is to help you the best we can! You can also record any questions you have beforehand in writing or on an audio message, so you don’t forget them. Also, feel free to ask for any answers or recommendations in writing to refer to later.

Starting a Treatment Plan

Your appointment will culminate in a treatment plan. This can range from medicine, to scans, to more tests. Your doctor will explain to you the upcoming course of action!
